#stayhome #school & #survive

Let's first address the monkey in the room ...

It's been silent here.
For good reason with all things chasing sanity and survival.

Rather than a bunch of words you may or may not read, let's get you caught up with a picture glimpse into what the Broersma #stayhomestayhealthy has looked like this Spring.

{ Distant Learning. }

When news of school shifting too distant learning, I first panicked gathering all the ideas
and then attempted to execute a plan.
Pinterest is great. Pinterest has the ability to expose two types of people: Always Nailed It or 100% Failed It.
I had great intentions those first few weeks of school being put into action in our home. We homeschooled for seven years so I knew the steps and process. The catch was some students weren't as receptive to my Pinterest ideas as I was to implementing them daily. Regardless, we made it work... through tears, struggles, redirection and long walks to reset... we have been making this work.
Baylee's teacher has been reading stories to her on Marco Polo and Charlie has been crushing his school goals with impressive self motivation. Addison helped Myriam with her reading for a bit then shifted to her
online school program.
Tim and I are so proud of the kids for making the abrupt shift in learning. Did we do it well? Not everyday.
And that's okay.
Summer is almost here and some learning goals will stay in place throughout the
next few months which is okay too.
Our homeschool cart is now a part of the living room and I'll try to squeeze
learning when the moment presents itself.
If this has taught me anything, it's that our decision to put the kids in school was a healthy choice.
Yes, I'm Mom and teacher, but I long for the day when I'm just Mom.

{ Projects & Play }

We found many opportunities to learn outside through activities we call chores. Picking up winter branches, planting seeds and taking care of the lawn gave a much needed break from being inside. God has blessed us with a dry Spring. Yes, we've had some rainy days but more than anything, the skies have been blue and warm enough to step into the fresh air.

{ Learning & Growing. }

Our seeds did okay. Some grew and others got moldy or stolen by our neighborhood squirrels. Even the cute popsicle stick birdhouse Myriam made was robbed of its birdseed by the pesky squirrel hanging from the gutter. Our snap peas are now well out of the ground and beginning to make their way up the garden trellis. Our walks through the neighborhood always prove entertaining as the girls chase bunnies, seek out deer, look for animal tracks and watch the skunk cabbage almost grow taller than Miss Bee herself.
Charlie's learned to have guitar lessons via Zoom or FaceTime even though his practicing hours have lessened slightly with outside distractions.
I'm most thankful for the thing I hate the most; screen time. Baylee can actually sit still while learning from ABC Mouse and for that I'm grateful.

{ Self care. }

I'm about ready for another haircut and have had to walk away from my scissors many times over. In a weak moment I did manage to foil my own hair and even tried putting my human cutting skills into dog grooming with our poor puppy cutting her locks too. Major kudos to dog groomers. I will never do that again.
As for skin care, well, Addi is always so good to do the masks, wash the face and include her little sisters in the pampering process.
I haven't taken hair clients for years, but still trim the family's hair. It's been awhile since not having the ability to reach over my head due to recovery.  When family members called and told me they were looking special, I pulled the basics outside and set up shop in the carport. No worries, the family wore masks and hands were washed. As for the family gray hairs collecting among a few... well, the stores are closed and I'm all out of color so truth be told you're no brunette any longer.

{ Recreational Play a.k.a. PE }

This is vital. This is necessary.
Myriam and I have been taking two mile walks searching for teddy bears and hearts in neighboring windows while sharing in deep discussions or soaking up the silence. Our loop usually takes us to Dad's office for a cup of water and back home through the forest. We've also had many trips to Berthusan Park getting lost on the trails and letting Millie explore in the trees.
On the warmer days, Charlie and Myriam took on a new adventure of floating down the creek. Quite comical to watch and thankful it's not too deep. I see this happening more often with summer fast approaching.
Addi told me I needed new hiking friends after our Sunday hike up Sumas Mountain. We didn't make it to the top but a little over two miles in for lunch proved good for all of us.
The benefit of all things being cancelled and closed is family time.
Yes, somedays I think we've had too much, but Tim knew we needed to see a different set
of four walls for this weekend.
A quick trip to Vantage, WA was exactly what all of us needed. The drive there was enough for me. Silent.
It was incredibly refreshing to not have bickering, teasing or whining the entire way over the pass. Once we arrived at the private campsite, Grandpa Doug greeted us with a hilariously, well thought out scavenger hunt for the kids. The only piece he forgot was to look up at the growing gray clouds and massive downpour that led us all running down the hillside being pelted with twenty-five mph winds and sideways rain.
You know it's stormy when the tumbleweed passes you by sprinting back towards the motorhome drenched in sunny clothing. Ahh, no worries. None of us were hurt and the hunt continued the following morning with the kids "saving the world from the coronavirus."
You can only imagine the eye-rolls and jokes made about this game getting the kids hiking two miles up a steep hillside all for ice cream at the end.
And no, the water was not warm which is why you only saw these two crazies swimming in it.

{ Break time. }

We now await the reopening of all the things and cross our fingers for in person classrooms next fall...
And if not, we will make that work too.

Twenty Nineteen Highlights

A picture glimpse from a few top moments in 2019.

 { Basketball }

Charlie began playing for McLendon Athletics last fall and continues to play on the select team. He loves the sport and works hard at becoming better.

{ Graduation to Pre-school }

Our oldest graduated from Ebenezer Christian School and youngest began preschool this fall.

{ Guitar }

Charlie continued to gain skills playing guitar and had the opportunity to play at his school chapel leading worship. His collection of pedals and instruments has grown quite a bit this past year. Myriam started guitar lessons as well!

{ Tim & Addi traveled to Cambodia in June. }

After graduation, these two flew overseas as Tim gave our daughter a first hand look to the ministry we support; the Life Giving Network. Eyes wide open, Addison experienced many firsts on this trip including the Great China Wall, smelly "fresh" markets and visiting the Killing Fields.

{ Great China Wall }

{ Barbershop International Convention }

Tim and Charlie had the opportunity to share the stage together in the same place Tim won in 2005 with Realtime. Charlie had no nerves about singing in front of thousands of people and looked incredibly handsome as our little Man Cub sang tags, took in the events and road tripped with Grandpa Doug to Salt Lake City on the front end.

{ Reclaimed book launch in August! }

{ Tim turned 40! }

Yep. My Love turned forty and celebrated with a motorcycle trip with buddies. I still brought poop emoji cupcakes and a toilet paper roll cake into the office to celebrate this huge event. My turn is coming this next year.

{ Bryce Canyon with new running friends. }

{ Elements Hospitality Team }

I was given the title of coach as a dozen runners from the office ran the Grand Circle Trailfest accomplishing personal goals, team adventures and emotional finishes. It was such an honor to run this again and see others do something amazing.

{ Drivers Permit }

Addison is doing a fine job learning the ways of the road. I prefer in town driving and tense up slightly when she drives over 35mph. Drivers Ed is complete and now works to fulfill all 60 hours of practice driving.

 { Last child potty trained. }

This was sweet relief. Took some coaching but we have finally arrived in the point of parenting where no diapers are being purchased.

{ Boat trip with Papa & Nana }

Other Highlights:
 Ministry travel
Almost finished house plans for a remodel in 2020
Summer swimming pool
Hysterectomy
& the simple fact that we survived another year together.

Happy 2020.

{ E I G H T }

I know. This is late...
But better belated than never!

{ Mimi }

This past November Myriam turned eight years old. The weeks and days were counted down and anticipated Red Robin birthday sundae well deserved. She had been waiting for that one since my birthday in August and made it very clear how we'd celebrate this years birthday.
Lunch at Red Robin, jumping at Summit with family then dinner at McDonald's.
That last bit never happened for obvious reasons!

 { This face. }

Turning eight years old was a big deal in our home this year. Second grade, taking guitar lessons, impressed with how tall she is and calling herself a big kid are a few high lights.
I pray Myriam never gets too big to snuggle and the sweet side never gets lost.

 { The best snorkel smile ever. }

Summer 'N' Motion Wk. #1

{ School's out - another year with a fantastic aide. }

Myriam had a full week before catching up with Addi and Charlie on summer vacation. Once she was done, we immediately began the fun! Our first stop was Summit Trampoline to bust out some crazy and take advantage of small crowds. Of course, the kids were ready for treats which made Edaline Ice Cream in
Fairhaven the perfect tasty treat.

 { The training continues with the team. }

I'm so proud of this here group. Many of them are new to trail running and doing amazing. Some minor injuries they're working through but this team is dedicated to making the fall race a success. Hoping we can get our entire team (13 of us) together on the trails soon! When most of the team are project managers with jobs across the country, it makes for a true challenge to get everyone in the same spot at the same time!

 { Father's Day with Papa }

Since Daddy was out of country on Father's Day, we decided to spend the afternoon at my parents. The picnic never moved out of the front yard while big kids took to the bike jumps, playing basketball and others sneaking popcorn next to Papa.

Cupcakes & Cider

Today was a good day.
The kind of day that allowed Myriam to play hooky from school and do all things Auntie's favorite with Papa and Nana. From hiking at Lake Whatcom to dingy rides in Bellingham Harbor, playing at parks and lunches at the Web Locker... all things that brought joy to Auntie Traci.
Today would have been my sister's 40th birthday.
And as crazy as it may be, I wanted to remember and celebrate the day my mother gave birth to the oldest daughter; my big sister.
A day that no mother will forget.
So, we did just that. My parents played, the kids sang the birthday song, we ate cupcakes and gathered as family to remember, laugh, catch up and have reason to toast the life we all loved so much. I imagine my sister beaming with pride seeing family join together with reason to party.
I caught myself smiling randomly throughout the day reminiscing over childhood birthday parties and all things celebratory. My sister was the best when it came to birthdays and honoring people. Gifts for no reason, confetti in cards and every gift having reason or connection to what that person adored.
She never was without thought or concern for others.
A gift she gave to all that had the blessing of meeting her.
Happy 40th birthday sister.

 { Mom & Dad... they celebrated well. }

Ah Chew... Bless You

The symphony of sneezes are in full swing in our home. The itchy nose where you just can't seem to reach, watery eyes and repeat sneezes are the first indicator things are ready to burst into color and sounds of lawn mowers becoming the normal outside back ground noises.
It appears all of us, to some extent, have been fighting seasonal allergies and getting
worse with every year passing.
Even with the annoying symptoms of allergies, we still find time to play.
The ladies have had a few days of fun together exploring Boulevard Park, feeding the ducks at Whatcom Falls, catching up on homework while the younger two burn energy off at Perch & Play, rolling down hills at the "Red Park" and meeting the needs of our taste buds with gelato and bread sticks. There's also been fitting room fashion shows which is quite comical I may add. One of those years where Addison has shot up resulting in nothing working for summer attire, Myriam not quite tall enough to fit Addi's hand-me-downs and Baylee on her own needing a few fill-in items to prepare these princesses for summer. Thank goodness not all will be teenagers at one time or we'd need to find some money tree seeds somewhere. I love watching each relationship grow, challenge and inspire the other.
A while back, the ladies were playing together and one made the remark, "Hey, we all have a different Tummy Mommy." Hearing that made my heart stumble a bit, but also soar, knowing God knew our family dynamics long before I was ready to step into this role as Mom to all three. There are frustrations, struggles, joys and lots of laughter with each one. Each daughter has something special about themselves making them unique in their own way. Having these special girl dates makes them that much more special simply because God saw each of them needing one another.

Research & Play

{ LaConner Town Tour March 23, 2019}

My partners in crime. Researchers with a sweet tooth.
While Charlie was playing basketball at the Tulip Tournament in a tight gym with limited seating, the little girls and I went west to complete the final details for the Just Us Amazing Race coming up in May with NCCTK.
As part of the Couples Getaway, the team and I reconstruct a mini version of the TV show game throughout LaConner, WA, while executing Route Info, Race Challenges and Road Blocks all to get to the final Pit Stop.
Myriam & Baylee were my assistants tasting treats, taking lots of pictures, posing in front of statues and taking in all the sunshine on this Saturday covering over three miles of ground.
We even managed to take in some glorious daffodil fields as the "joy" spread across multiple fields.
My heart was full.
Some days can be extremely challenging, stressing, and trauma driven, but this day had
laughter, connection, sweet words and play.
My sweet ladies and I all needed the research party and play!

Christmas Adventures

It's been all things Christmas here lately.
Addison and I have been binge watching on Holiday Netflix catching ourselves smiling back at the TV in the expected guy-gets-girl classic movie ending. We've even managed to boot the guys to the basement a few times claiming all things cheese upstairs.
Myriam has been learning about other styles of Christmas celebrations at school making for some interesting conversations. Meanwhile, Baylee has been learning all things potty training being surprised to learn that pee is indeed yellow (we're finally making progress here!).The playroom tree has been redecorated a few times by our little's and Addison taught Myriam how to make snowflakes so for awhile there was a continual trail of white paper pieces cut up all over the floor. I'm happy to report there was no hair cutting... Knock on wood it's been two years since the last self-inflicted mane style
Charlie has been focused on basketball in-between learning some new Christmas songs on his guitar. The Man Cub is gaining skills and picks up sheet music very quickly! Not sure I'd let him lead worship quite yet...
Good to have goals!
Baylee has been playing with her new Christmas Tree stuffy 'Tiny Piney.' Her curiosity around the tree is high but no ornaments have been broken or gifts unwrapped. Yes, I have presents under the tree and all the kids think they have figured out the number system on the presents. I keep telling them, "You're not even close!" That's been fun to watch as they all try to guess what the gifts are and which are their own.
As for fun, well, we paid an obnoxious amount of money to see Enchant Christmas which was an overpriced display of lights with gigantic reindeer lost in a Christmas light maze. We planned to ice skate but it cost more money and the line was too long for the amount of patience or attention left in our group. Can't say I'd go again but the family time we had was great... And we had no meltdowns or runners. Win!

{ Safeco Field: Enchant Christmas }

Tim's work party was earlier this month making our party line up simple and small. Mom and I went to the NCCTK Christmas Concert providing cheer, songs and laughter. The gingerbread houses are decorated and already being picked at with all Christmas cards stamped, handed out or ready to be sent. Addison and Tim decorated the office tree together and later her and I played cards by tree light. The score was tied by the end of the night!

This past weekend we went to see The Grinch in theaters and after, met Baylee's newest 1/2 sister at the hospital. There was a special moment as Naomi and I entered the nursery being asked who Mom was to Baylee. She without hesitation replied, "We both are!" Tim and I are very proud of the person and mom Naomi has become. We were happy to celebrate with the family!
My kitchen counters have a delicious display of cookies quickly disappearing into the hands of hungry children and Christmas music is usually always playing somewhere in the home.
My favorite part of December this far is the quiet moments sitting in my prayer chair with just the twinkle lights from the tree and fire mantel lighting the living room. Something magical happens starring at the Christmas tree. My thoughts get lost, memories reappear and excitement of
what's to come brings a contented smile to my face.

{ Welcoming baby Noella. }

I love all things Christmas.
Yes, there are people missing but the beauty of Christmas remains.
The Christmas crafts will continue and advent calendar opened daily. This next week Christmas breaks begins for the kids and the wish for snow becomes real. Our Christmas Day movie line up is already decided and groceries purchased for holiday snacks and meals.
Baby Jesus... We are ready for You!
Merry Christmas.

Perfect Seven Celebrations

{ Sweet seven. }

This sweet thing when asked what kind of birthday party she wanted, explained without any hesitation, "I want angels. I want everyone to be all in white and have it all be about angels because I want everyone to know that God loves us so much He sent us angels to protect us and love us."
Myriam's request has not changed in two months since asking; her interest and understanding of angels has grown in that time too. With her angel feather wings and angel crown perfectly placed, we together got our best white on and celebrated all seven years of Myriam Judith's life.

 { No stains occurred during party hours. }

Myriam was surrounded by those she loves: Kendall (the babysitter), Judy (the reading buddy), Papa & Nana, Auntie Lindsay & cousins, Grandpa Doug, Uncle Ryan, Uncle Kari, & Kendra who stopped by earlier today (another sitter). What I loved most was watching all the facial expressions from opening gifts to receiving love. Myriam has no lack of feelers and she got her tank filled full today.
It was such an honor to celebrate her well today! Myriam has worked so hard this past year and to have a day where it was all about her was perfect.

{ Can't believe this happened seven years ago already. }

I will never forget standing, maybe pacing, outside the delivery room and hearing the sounds of Myriam's first cries when her bio-dad bursted out the door and shared she was here. It was incredible; no words can capture what happened in that one single moment. Standing here seven years later...a joyful gift indeed.
Thank you to those who came today and to those who have prayed for this birthday girl from paper pregnancy until present day.
Myriam will be a world changer someday. She will make others laugh and share joy in the darkest of places. Her love of Jesus will light up rooms, change peoples lives and multiply the Kingdom. Myriam has grown up so much this past year both in heart and height. Mommy and Daddy are waiting in anticipation for how God will use this high energy, intense loving, and curiosity seeking princess in our own lives and those of others.
Myriam Judith... You are such a gift of love and joy in our lives.
Myriam: longed for, wished for.
Your name can't be more true.

Our Forever Family

{ Papa & his Little Lady }

A year ago today Baylee officially joined our family as she legally gained our last name as her own.
A day that will forever be etched in our minds and eventually she'll understand the importance
of that day as well.
Not much changed that day or since then aside from attitudes gaining strength and the bond between Papa and Baylee intensifying. These two are inseparable and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The most beautiful thing about adoption is how instantly our girls became family. From the first time our family met Myriam in the hospital to the first time Baylee met family - no last
name needed to be changed to see hearts claiming these girls as our own.
This month we acknowledge and celebrate the blessing of adoption. Our family has grown through adoption and, even though it can be really hard, we'd never change it if we could. God knew in advance our little girls would be ours forever long before we knew of their existence. That brings us such comfort knowing God has this all planned out according to His plan, His will and His timing. So, we celebrate the gift of a forever family and cherish every Bee Squeeze we can get.
Happy Adoption Day sweet baby girl!
