Four Years of Busy Joy

After a long night of waiting, pacing, not knowing what was going to happen; Myriam Judith was born. I just happened to be walking right outside the delivery room door as I heard Myriam's first cries. It was a beautiful moment and from that point on, our lives have been forever changed.
Four years of pure laughter, excitement, one-liner's and exhaustible curiosity that has both Tim and I running, chasing and always wondering what type of world changer our youngest will be.
We celebrated Myriam's birthday with a special girls trip to Frozen on Ice this past Sunday followed by an attempted Cake Boss Olaf cake which was a complete fail. In the end, Addison created an adorable marshmallow cake to celebrate our baby girl. In usual fashion, Myriam was theatrical when Anna was frozen crying out loudly, "ANNA!" and then wiping tears from her eyes. It is these sweet moments that I'm reminded how big this little ones heart is. As tiring as she can be, there are more soft moments where her fully capable, loving spirit wraps itself around you and finds you melted into her sweet arms in a tight squeeze. But don't let the sultry "I love yous," get you too mushy because this one can be just as blunt as her older brother.

Just the other day as we were driving south for Thanksgiving, our princess ripped a loud one and instantly said in a stern, mischievous little voice, "Smell my victory." Yep, that happened. There's also the recent passion to find Pixie Dust in order to fly to find the love of her life, Peter Pan. Yes, we are all on the hunt to find the magical dust to find the husband of her dreams. It has been the talk of most conversations lately although, after a few hours of playing with Princess Ariel, there seems to be a longing to find Prince Eric too.
Our lives are always being entertained with the humor, the stories, the snuggles and actions from our sweet pea. But, don't call her that to her face or she will quickly remind you that her name is Myriam Judith. She does not like nicknames so don't even waste your breath.
Some of the biggest accomplishments from this past year are first and most important the feat of tackling potty training. It's my most dreaded part of parenting, but we FINALLY have conquered. We had planned for Myriam to attend one pre-school this year, but a blessing in disguise had us making new plans. Myriam now attends the Peer-Preschool Program at Lynden Middle School and loves it. The "Magic School Bus" picks her up right in our driveway as Myriam joyfully sits down and waves passionately as she drives off with her fellow classmates.
In the few weeks she's been attending, we have already seen huge improvements with no complaints about going. Myriam can write her name 'M' and can draw a mean stick figure of herself. Yes, there are many moments of curiosity that get her in trouble, but amazingly,
we usually all end up laughing once the moment passes.

We have such joy parenting Myriam. Tim and I are constantly reminded of how much we needed her in our lives. God had a beautiful plan for us when we accepted the journey of adoption for our family. The month of November is adoption awareness month. I've recently had the opportunity of walking another local family through their journey of adoption. It's brought back memories of our own journey, given me more gratitude for our extended family we gained through adoption and reason to hug a little tighter the gift that was chosen for our family.
Myriam Judith,
happy birthday to you and thank you for being exactly how God made you.
A complete delight and joy.

Thankful & Blessed

Today I reflect on the over abundant blessings in my life. God has been so good to me and I'm simply thankful.

A warm bed to rest my tired head.
A safe home to lay in ease as my family recharges for the day to come.
Warm coffee.
The furnace that keeps the chill out of the air.
A body that is in commitment to get me from point A to point B.
Cells that produce healthy blood flowing through my veins.
Clothing; whether I see it as old or in style with today's fashions.
Manners that say please and thank you.
A safe vehicle.
Taste buds that enjoy a delicious meal.
Seasons of change.
Twinkly lights that sparkle.
Lotion to meet the needs of cracked skin in the dry weather.
Medicine.
Doctors with the knowledge to treat illness.
Physical therapy; like it or not.
Friendships.
Laughter until I pee my pants (TMI?).
Mountains that get me running.
A good pair of shoes; running or for fashion.
A snickers bar.
International family.
Cambodia.
Clean water; for showering or drinking.
My wash machine.
Awesome drying racks (Thanks IKEA).
Church family.
Honey snuggles on the couch.
Dutch Bakery buns.
Ice covered crisp leaves.
Air fresheners.
 Jobs that are enjoyed.
Creative bones to create.
The ability to make a choice.
Right vs. wrong
Vacuum cleaners and dusters.
Worship music.
Stretchy pants for after a big meal.

The list could go on for pages, but ultimately, I'm thankful for what is close to me most:
My family.
Our time on earth is short compared to the time we spend next to God in Heaven for eternity.
I think of Grandpa Van Dyken and the memories that have stayed close to me all twelve years in his absence. Watching Mr. Bean with the kids, I chuckle thinking of Grandpa Haak hysterically laughing and crying with every contorted face he makes. There are great relatives, friends and young kids who all made an impact in my life that I am thankful for.
Life can be gone in an instant and today, I'm holding those closest to me a little tighter in gratitude for what I currently have in my life. My family brings me joy, contentment and much laughter.
I am overwhelmed with thanks today.
Jesus, we offer our lives to you in thankfulness for what you graciously gave to us.

Happy Thanksgiving.

October Recap

The month started with Tim and I recovering from Jet Leg as we adjusted back to life after Cambodia. In my planning for our trip, I forgot about the 12 mile run I committed to days after returning. Thankfully, we had gorgeous weather and the views were spectacular; east and west, oceans and mountains. The four of us ran with the Cascade Mountain Runners which gave us extra peeps to chat with as we climbed to the top and ran back down all to meet at the Acme Diner for milkshakes and snacks. Unfortunately, my tummy was not so accepting of dairy and sugar back home in the states so I watched others as they chowed down on pie and ice cream.

{ The kids had an awesome time making waves at the Great Wolf Lodge. }

 { Stoney Ridge Farms }

Sadly, this will be the last year we tour the pumpkin patch, visit the farm animals and savor the warm fall treats at Stoney Ridge Farms. After years of business they are closing the doors, but regardless, we have been able to capture some amazing moments at the expense of many others preparing the farm for thousands of kids to explore. Addison invited her friend from Mp3, Kayden, and Charlie sought out for the best pumpkin to carve. Myriam had a moment at the patch, but we were able to work through it after a few embarrassing minutes for Mommy. We ended our time with yummy pumpkin donuts and continued play dates at home.

And with a couple weeks to go before the GoRuck Light event I have been diligently training for, I went ahead and tore my calf muscle. To get all medical on you, a grade 2 gastrocnemius calf tear. Next to childbirth, this was the most painful thing I have physically experienced. Our family at E2 Fitness Center has gone over and beyond in providing help to our family as I've been unable to do anything besides sit in my chair with my leg up, heated, iced and popping Tylenol when the pain is to much to handle.  Thanks to my family and friends (Mom, Melissa & April are Rock Stars ) meals for our family, fresh flowers from the garden and care packages filled with sweets, treats, wine and things to do all keeping me from going stir-crazy in my recovery, have been graciously delivered. Myriam has had some fantastic play dates with cousins and friends making the TV take less parenting credit. I started physical therapy and have an intense love-hate relationship with Eric as he feels the need to make me sweat, cause my body to shake and curse his name while "massaging" (more like digging, kneading and giving my leg a tap, tap, tap like an attaboy.) in attempts to encourage my muscle to thread itself back together. No cute heeled boots or holiday shoes for me. I traded those in for a fancy boot that should give me some assistance in walking again.

{ Thankful for NCCTK live stream from home! }

{ Charlie & Brevin at his last football game. }

{ Russell, Poodles & Biker Chick ready for the Harvest Carnival. }

And with that, October wraps up to be a successful month of graded homework assignments, projects completed, dancing in the leaves had and the official start of listening to Christmas music beginning.
